I am almost finished making my Truth Detector for kids. It is hard for kids to tell a lie in a show so I decided to make it trigger when a truth is told.
There is a button I push every time I ask a question. It gives an electronic space sound. The siren lights and sounds when a truth is told. Smoke occurs at the end of the questions signifying overheat of too much lies.
Any suggestions for funny questions I could ask a child volunteer ranging from 7 and above?

The Gene Gordon book A magical legacy has a bunch of questions and a routine that Gene used to do.

It would be funny if the kid told the truth, but the rest of the audience is convinced that he is telling a lie. You could do this with a McCombical Deck where everyone is convinced he took one card, but he actually took another and is telling the truth, so in the end, the joke is on the audience for not believing him. Needs work.

I love the question "which do you like better, candy or your mom?"

Just make sure it signals a lie if they say candy!!

I built one of these years and years ago. I used it a little during my clowning days. I never really used it much, and it got packed away. Recently I ran across it and got it out and played with it. Mine has a green light for the truth and a red light for the lies. A loud buzzer also goes off with the lie. The lights and siren are controlled with momentary switches on the back. Mine is also equipped with a small smoke pot which is controlled with a momentary toggle switch. Since some of the momentary switches can be easily pressed during storage or packing, I put a master power toggle switch on it too. It runs off of one 9V and one AA battery. It also has a way to manually release some little spring snakes.

I cannot remember exactly how I used it, but I do remember that I turned the questioning on me. The machine was buzzing and lighting up when I would brag on my accomplishments and things like that. I would declare that the machine must be broken and tst it on a kid. It would show he/she was telling the truth. I would open my machine and remove some big "bugs" and claim I had not gotten all the bugs out yet, and I would try again. It still caught me telling lies and finally began smoking. Then as a climax I would open the top again and little spring snakes would fly out.

It was my first attempt at building a magic prop, so it is kind of special to me. I should start using it again.

Today, I added a laughter sound (gigling witch) as a signal for the truth. A siren for a lie.

A few silly questions I have in mind:
1. Are you a boy or a girl?
2. Are you having fun at the party?
3. Did you like the food?
4. Are you enjoying the magic show? Am I a good magician?
5. Do you have a girlfriend / boyfriend?
6. Do you wash your hands after you use the toilet?
7. Do you like school?
8. Do you like your teacher?
9. Do you love your teacher?
10.Do you want to kiss your teacher?
11.Which do you like better, candy or your mom? (from Jimhlou)

(please feel free to add more to this list)

Lou,

It looks pretty funny! I would have the kid holding it down with the handles.. . I think that would be visually funnier.

Look in John Breeds book - he has a yes / no game that would work well with your idea / gadget

LVMagicAl - yes. This prop (or two with differnt coloured lights) would be great with ideas from there.

Finally, I have completed my project. Siren sound and rotating red lights go on when a lie is told. Blue LED lights and giggling witch sound when truth is told. There are also 3 LED lights that continuously flash with a laser sound when a button is pushed for each question. Finally, smoke is produced when the machine overheats to too much lies.
I had to reduce sound of the siren sound because it was too ear piercing.
I will use this for tomorrow's show.
Headband is adjustable to fit kid and adult sizes. No need to hold on the handles but it looks funnier when they are.
I decided to use a 2 channel remote instead of a 4 channel remote. It is concealed at the back of a jumbo playing card where questions are written on the face.

Lou, it looks great, and the description sounds fabtastic! Just be careful and try not to pierce the volunteers eardrums or set their hair/head on fire! Smile
